CALL FOR
PAPERS
"Trends
in Research for Image-based Electronic Editions
and Collections"
Special session at GVIP'05
International Conference on Graphics, Vision and
Image Processing Conference
19-21 December 2005, Cairo, Egypt
This special session is organized by
Jerzy W. Jaromczyk (Computer Science) and
Ross Scaife
(Modern and Classical Languages) from the
Collaboratory for Research in Computing for
Humanities at the University of Kentucky, USA.
Computing for Humanities, specifically Digital
Libraries is an interdisciplinary field
involving computer and other sciences,
engineering, literature, linguistics, arts,
architecture and history, with applications in
image acquisition and processing, multimedia,
virtual displays and electronic editions and
collections.
In recent years an increasing number of
proposals and implementations have appeared
related to the creation, analysis, maintenance,
and access to digital collections and electronic
editions. Digital images are central elements in
this research, and form the common theme for
presentations in this special session. The
session will explore research trends and
developments in tools for acquisition of digital
collections, computational approaches for
building editions based on such collections, and
methods to provide access to digital collections
to study original documents and other cultural
artifacts.
The venue for this special session is at the
crossroads of three continents and is in the
land of the
Ancient Library of Alexandria and its
beautiful modern version, the
Library of Alexandria.
Submissions are invited on all topics concerning
humanities computing where the digital image
plays a pivotal role. The non-exclusive list of
topics consists of:
- collaborative environments for building
and working on digital collections and
electronic editions
- algorithms and implementations for
computer-based research in literary,
cultural and historical studies for the
arts, architecture and music
- techniques for image acquisition
- image processing for digital
preservation and restoration
- OCR methods for images of damaged
documents and artifacts
- study of manuscripts using digital tools
and techniques
- multimedia and visualization issues in
presenting digital collections
- the role of collaboration between
engineering, computer science and humanities
in academic curricula
Of particular interest are submissions
reporting on collaborative research on
interesting collections of documents and artwork
and demonstrations of software. Accepted papers
will be invited for presentation and will
require at least one author to register for and
attend GVIP'05 in order to present the accepted
work. Selected papers will be considered for
publication in a journal or book devoted to
Digital Libraries.
