Decentralized Controllers for Power System Load Frequency Control

Abstract

This paper presents two decentralized control schemes for load frequency control (LFC) of interconnected power systems. The first controller is a state feedback linear controller. The second controller is a nonlinear controller. The two control schemes are designed using Lyapunov theory. For simplicity and without loss of generality, the analysis and simulation studies are carried out for a two area interconnected power system. The simulation results indicate that the proposed control schemes work well even in the presence of generation- rate constraints. Moreover, the simulation results show that the proposed controllers are robust to changes in the parameters of the power system.

Biography:

Muthana Alrifai received the B.S. degree from Kuwait University, Kuwait, in 1993, and the M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, in 1994 and 1999, respectively. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kuwait University. His current research interests include the control of Power systems and motor drives.

 

Mohamed Zribi received the B.S. degree from the University of Houston in 1985 with magna Cum laude Honors. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana in 1987 and 1992, respectively. He was with the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from 1992 till 1998. He is currently a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department, Kuwait University. His research interests are in nonlinear control, sliding mode control, motion control and robotics.
