Abstract
Synchronous static compensator (STATCOM) can be used to improve the dynamic
performance of a power system. This article presents an
online adaptive pole-shift method for stabilization of a
single machine system which is then extended to a
multi-machine system. An adaptive linear plant parameter
model is used to derive the pole-shift control strategy. The
controller performance has been tested for various
disturbances. Responses for the single machine system were
also compared with optimized PI control and robustness of
the proposed adaptive algorithms was tested. From a number
of simulation studies on the single machine as well as the
multi-machine power system it was observed that the adaptive
algorithm converges very quickly and also provides robust
damping profiles to the under damped power system.
