Abstract:
This paper presents a project that has been running in Cairo University. The motivation of this project is to use scientific researches to develop practical application. Webcams are used widely in the last decade by many applications and users world wide. Webcam software allows users to share snapshots or live images. Depending on user and available software, these images may be publicly available into the Internet, or only available to the authenticated users. One of the most challenging difficulty is the bandwidth vs. high quality pictures. This paper engages in webcam challenges thru reverse engineering of its architecture, evaluates its performance and other design considerations, proposes a low cost hardware solution, and points out needs and limitations to apply webcam in local environment. Five B.Sc. graduation projects and three M.Sc. topics were built on the system presented.

Keywords: webcam, Java Application, Java Applet, JMF,  Internet communications.
