Abstract:

Despite rapid progress in improving mass-storage density and digital communication system performance, compression of data (integer) representing sampled signals continues to be important in many engineering and research areas, since it can overcome data storage and transmission bandwidth limitations. Many coding techniques result in broadband residue (large-dynamicrange integer) sequences that must be retained for an exact recovery of the original data. Of the several coding techniques available in literature1-8, this coding technique is simple and easy to implement. Further this technique is found to give good data (integer) compression, results in higher compression ratios. The original data (integer) are operated upon according to a particular algorithm to produce the compressed data, reversing the process; the compressed data (integer) is decompressed to reproduce the original data. The degree of data reduction obtained as a result of compression process is known as the compression ratio. Comparison with other coding algorithms such as Embedded Zero Tree (EZW), Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) is being carried out for different input (such as ECG data, and Image data). The Peak to Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR), Compression ratio (CR) for Image data and Percent Root Mean Square Difference (PRD), Compression Ratio (CR) for ECG data is calculated and compared with all the algorithms. The Cascade coding algorithm and comparison with other three algorithms are simulated and tested in MATLABŪ 6.5. This data compression-using cascade coding algorithms can be implemented using hardware circuitry to meet the requirements of real-time applications.
