Abstract
There have been great interests in developing efficient video compression techniques due to the increased multimedia applications in today’s era of digital technology. In this paper, we present a technique for lossless video sequence compression using predictive coding as a method to improve the compression efficiency. The proposed algorithm is an adaptive method that switches between prediction in the spatial domain and prediction in the wavelet domain by estimating the inter frame motion similarities using correlation. Noting that motion compensation in the wavelet domain is very inefficient for high motion video sequences due to the shift-variant property of the wavelet coefficients, motion compensation is directly applied to a high motion activity sequence in its spatial domain. The frames that have more similarities with very few motion changes are coded using temporal prediction in its integer wavelet domain. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better compression performance and well suited for lossless compression of high quality video frames.
