Title: Improvement of Transient Stability by FACTS devices

Abstract: The rate of dissipation of transient energy is usually used as a tool to measure dynamic system damping. For such a given system equipped with FACTS devices, the above concept is then applied to determine the additional damping. This paper applies and discusses this control strategy for suppressing undesirable electromechanical oscillations in power system with both static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Dynamic model of these FACTS devices are derived in this study, Analytical expressions for transient energy function and additional damping provided by the SSSC and STATCOM are also derived. Several disturbances are studied: First, a step change in the generator input mechanical power and a three phase fault in a bus are used on a single machine infinite bus (SMIB). Then a three phase short circuit fault is simulated on both a SMIB and a multimachine power system. In both the systems, it is found that the found results convey eminent efficiency of the described theory. MATLAB/SIMULINK software is used for all simulations.
