| Title: | Bringing JINIĀ® to the Web
| Authors: | Mahmoud Abaza, Warren Strange
| Abstract: | An innovative model for extending Jini to the Web is proposed as an alternative to Web Services using SOAP. Two approaches for Web enabling Jini are described, the first using the JXTA Peer-to-Peer Network, and the second using a point-to-point HTTP transport. Both solutions leverage the pluggable transport provided by Jini's Extensible Remote Invocation (JERI) layer. The functionality and performance of each integration approach is compared. The implementation of service discovery protocols over both infrastructures is described. A new Jini service (the Postbox) solves the problem of callbacks for clients located behind a firewall complex. The Jini Configuration API is used to move all transport specific code out of the service API and into configuration files.
