Abstract:
Due to the recent advances in wireless sensor networks (WSN), many new protocols are specifically designed for these later where energy awareness is an essential consideration. In this paper, we present Stochastic Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (SLEACH). This protocol is based on dividing the network into dynamic clusters. The cluster’s nodes communicate with an elected node called cluster-head, and then the cluster-heads communicate the information to the base station. The cluster-heads are randomly chosen for each round. SLEACH includes a distributed cluster formation technique that enables self-organization of a large number of nodes, algorithms for adapting clusters and rotating cluster head positions to evenly distribute the energy load among all the nodes. In the proposed protocol the first node death occurs over 21% times longer than the first node death in LEACH protocol, and the number of transmitted messages to the base station is increased by 43% compared to the LEACH.
