Title: Removal of Impulsive Noise By Adaptive Length Recursive Weighted Median Filter Using Median Controlled Algorithm

Abstract: In this paper, an algorithm employing adaptive-length recursive weighted median filters for improving impulse noise filtering capability is proposed. This algorithm can achieve significantly better image quality than fixed length median filters when the images are corrupted by impulsive noise. The weights for the Recursive weighted median filter (RWM) are selected by median controlled algorithm. The other methods such as optimization technique and threshold decomposition technique for the calculation of the weights have high computational complexity and poor performance and, therefore, are limited in practical usefulness. In this paper, a median controlled algorithm, which is very efficient in terms of computational complexity, is presented. In median controlled algorithm, the filter gives the smallest weight for the impulse. However, for many weight functions, including the exponential one, this weight is non-zero. Thus the impulse has an effect on the output and the magnitude of the impulse is reduced. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with fixed length of median filters, fixed length weighted median filters using optimization technique, fixed length Recursive weighted median filters using optimization technique and Adaptive length Recursive weighted median filters using optimization technique.
