Title: A REVIEW – RESTORATION APPROACHES
Authors: S. Uma and S. Annadurai
Abstract: The field of image restoration has a quite long history that began in the 1950’s with the scientist’s involvement in the space program. These programs were responsible for producing many incredible images of the earth and solar system that, at that time were unimaginable. The images were obtained under big technical difficulties, such as vibrations, bad pointing, motion due to spinning etc. These difficulties resulted in degradations that could be scientifically and economically devastating. This was probably the first instance in the engineering community where the extreme need of ability to retrieve meaningful information as possible from such degraded images was encountered creating a new field that is today known as digital image restoration. Digital image restoration is a very broad field, as we discuss, and the emphasis is placed primarily on digital image restoration algorithms and thus contains many other successful approaches that have been developed from different perspectives, such as optics, astronomy, and medical imaging, just to name a few. In the process of reviewing this topic, we address a number of very important issues in this field that are not typically discussed in the technical literature. The following paper presents a survey of the popular digital image restoration techniques which are used to restore the original images from the noisy and blurred image.
