Abstract: This paper analyzes the embedded smoothing processing in some commonly used gradient operators used in edge detection, including Prewitt’s operator, Sobel’s operator, Canny’s detector and a wavelet transformation based method. The effects of the embedded smoothing processing on edge detection are studied and compared. The paper also reduces the design of a gradient operator to the design of one or two one dimensional smoothing functions.
