Abstract: A wide class of operations on images can be performed directly in the wavelet domain by operating on coefficients of the wavelet transforms of the images. Performing operations in the wavelet domain and then reconstructing the result is often more efficient than performing the same operation in the standard direct fashion. Hexagonal image processing uses hexagonal grid which have the advantages such as consistent connectivity, equidistant, rounder than squares – better for representing curve and circles and imitating the processing in the human eyes. By combining the advantages of wavelets with the advantages of hexagonal grid we get the hexagonal wavelets which are of no doubt faster and efficient than the usual wavelet. This work presents a wavelet transform on a hexagonal lattice based upon the method of lifting scheme. The work uses a novel addressing scheme known as spiral addressing scheme which is symmetric, spatiotopic, and hierarchical for representing hexagonal images. As a case study the proposed wavelet was applied to digital mammography where the utility was effectively demonstrated achieving similar results to a previous hexagonal wavelet.
