Title: Visual Cryptography for Color Image using Color Error Diffusion

Abstract: Visual cryptography Scheme (VCS) is an emerging cryptography technology, which uses the characteristics of human vision system to encrypt and decrypt images without requirement of complex computation. Naor and Shamir proposed the basic model of visual cryptography for binary images. In literature there are many papers on visual cryptography for binary images, but very few papers on VCS for gray-level images and color images. In this paper we propose a technique in which the given color image is separated into three channels and each channel is considered as a gray-level image. Then, for each gray-level image dithering and VCS schemes are applied independently to accomplish the creation of shares. Here we use color error diffusion for dithering technique. It reduces the color sets that renders the halftone image and chooses the color whose brightness variation is minimal, by which the desired color may be rendered. The binary shares of each channel are superimposed using XOR operation, instead of using OR operation as in traditional VCS scheme. The XOR operation helped us to get the perfect reconstruction of image and subsample this image to get the decrypted image of each channel whose size is same as secrete image. These three decrypted image channels are combined to get decrypted color image. Compared to other VCS using different dithering techniques our scheme produces less distorted and reduced size decrypted image.
