Abstract: Microarray image technology is a powerful tool for monitoring the expression of thousands of genes simultaneously. Each microarray experiment produces large amount of image data, hence appropriate compression routines for efficient storage and transmission that retain microarray image structures are required. Fractal compression is a lossy image compression method which uses fractals to achieve high levels of compression with preserving the image quality, relies on the fact that in certain images, parts of the image resemble other parts of the same image; this feature is so called the self-similarity. There exists high self-similarity in microarray images. In this paper we evaluate the use of fractal technique to compress the complementary DNA (cDNA) microarray images. Two implementations of the fractal method (Pure-fractal and Wavelet-fractal) have been applied on the microarray images in different configurations and their resultant images have been evaluated in terms of compression ratio and image quality.
