Title:
Analysis of Underwater Transients using Lifting based Wave Packet Transform
Authors:

Abstract:
This paper proposes a method for analyzing underwater transients buried in noise using wave packet transform. The challenge here is to develop a method applicable to different types of transients with unknown waveforms and arrival times. Traditional signal analysis techniques are not ideally suitable for transient analysis, as they make the assumption that the signals are stationary, or are infinite in extend. The advent of time-frequency representations has opened better methods for transient analysis. A novelty of this scheme is the implementation scheme adopted. Instead of the conventional filter bank scheme, this paper proposes a lifting based wave packet implementation. As a result, tremendous reduction in computation (around 60%) has been achieved. From the tiling plots, the time of occurrence and frequencies of the embedded transients is clearly brought out. The proposed algorithm has been implemented very efficiently on a DSP processor (ADSP 21062 Sharc) and its performance verified using a number of simulated and recorded underwater transients
