Title:
Spherical Modal Analysis of a Lens based Antenna for Mobile Broadband Systems
Authors:
Prakash Biswagar and S.Ravishankar
Abstract:
To economically meet the high directivity requirements of MBS (Mobile Broadband Systems), a composite antenna comprising a set of primary radiators embedded or backing up a dielectric lens is proposed. In this paper an accurate analytical formulation based on Spherical Modal Expansion (SME) of the near fields of primary radiators in the presence of a dielectric spherical lens is presented. The analysis treats the lens as a scatterer. It utilizes techniques for radial translation and spatial rotation of the Spherical Modal Complex Coefficients (SMCC) to align them to the phase centre of the lens. The SMCC of the scattered fields due to the lens are then obtained by application of boundary conditions. A sample computation is performed to demonstrate the approach and the results are compared with classical techniques like aperture integration. The analysis is flexible enough to accommodate different types of primary radiators and different shapes for the dielectric lens.
